In 2016, I was a single father with two young kids.
Like most renters, I was juggling a lot work, parenting, bills, and just trying to stay on my feet. The last thing I needed was to lose a huge chunk of my security deposit.
But that’s exactly what happened.
I was charged $900 for damage I didn’t cause. The blinds had teeth marks, and the property manager claimed it was from my pet. The problem? I didn’t even own a pet. I even offered to get dental records to prove it wasn’t from my kids, insane I know. To make things worse, they never even replaced the blinds I was charged for.
I didn’t have the time or money to fight it.
And honestly, I felt hopeless, like I was being taken advantage of and had no real way to push back.
That moment stuck with me. Because it wasn’t just about the money, it was about fairness, and the complete lack of power I felt as a renter.
Since then, I’ve heard far too many horror stories from other renters. And I made it a personal mission to help people avoid going through what I did.
That’s why I created Deposit Defenders, a third-party inspection service built to protect renters. We document every detail of your rental with time-stamped photos and video, backed by a detailed report and secure cloud storage. It’s simply a system designed with renters in mind, not landlords, so you don’t end up paying for things you didn’t damage.
What started with helping friends and family has now become a full-on mission:
